In this background paper, the OPCW has provided a summary of the Convention and the functioning of its implementation mechanisms. Additionally, it has outlined the organization's capacity-building activities in Middle Eastern countries regarding the implementation of the Convention and the prevention of chemical weapons re-emergence. Finally, it presents brief reports on the Convention's implementation in Syria, Libya, and Iraq and provides new updates on the resolution of outstanding issues regarding the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria.
